“I want to bring the outdoors, indoors,” I said to Roger Kahlbau during our first design meeting.
He nodded and said, “We can do that easily.”
I have stained hardwoods upstairs and a porcelain tile floor downstairs, and a modern kitchen with lots of light. I couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks Roger and Susan and the team at 2303 Designs for a great experience.

Susan is one of a kind. I met Susan at the Rough Hollow Parade of Homes a couple of years ago and fell in love with her work. We had just moved into a new home and she helped us go room by room to make each special. She was able to start with a blank canvas, however she incorporated a lot of our favorite pieces into her overall designs. She has amazing style and a fabulous personality. She is very collaborative and really listens to her clients. I will continue to work with Susan each year – we have a lot of fun together.
When Tom and I relocated our building company to Austin from California 20 years ago, we decided to build a parade “show home” in order to gain some market recognition. Luckily for us, Roger was the lead designer for the home and has remained my go-to-guy for any design work or advice since then. Not only was our first parade home beautiful, but it sold during the parade, the most important result for us. Over the years, we built two more “parade homes” with Roger’s complete involvement. The third parade home was in the 3 million “plus” price point and also sold before it’s completion.
Roger’s talent is obvious, but we have remained friends and colleagues for two other important reasons. Reason number one is his integrity and the second is his sense of humor. He has been willing to work with us within our budgets which are no always very generous and we’re still smiling!

For over ten years I have worked with Susan Rhodes to achieve a myriad of custom window treatments from ultra contemporary to conservative traditional looks. Susan has a great eye for the best treatment and fabric for each space; while at the same time keeping the client’s budget and personal needs a priority. Whether it be an over-the-top Parade Show-home or quaint bungalow, Susan is easy to work with and achieves great results!
Working with Roger Kalhbau always means something unique. No cookie-cutter window treatments or stale ideas. Roger is able to select each rug, lamp, fabric, etc. to fit perfectly into the big picture for each room. For over 8 years I have seen Roger transform everything from tucked-away ranches to exquisite Austin floor plans into beautifully decorated, comfortable homes.

When we decided to build a home on our Lake LBJ property we knew we wanted the overall feel to be “Lakeside Cottage meets Texas Hill Country”. To us that meant the feel of a vacation home even though it would be our full time residence: relaxed, inviting, easy upkeep, efficient, in harmony with the lot; lots of outdoor spaces, quality details and interesting architectural features; within our budget but not obvious compromises; a bit of drama here and there.
Because Susan had helped us the previous year in remodeling the small cabin that already existed on the lot we felt perfectly comfortable with her when it came time for the “big house”. She was with us from the blueprint stage all the way through to wall colors and window treatments. As this was the first home we had ever built we were novices in many areas. With Susan’s versatility and range of knowledge, she guided our selections all the way through the construction process. She poured over everything from electrical plans and roof colors; to door and custom cabinetry selections. Thanks to Susan our entry and halls have a wonderfully soft organic vine pattern etched into the stained concrete. It’s the bit of drama we wanted and it brings in the beauty of our natural setting inside the house. Thanks to Susan my husband’s vanity is the perfect height for him. And when we told Susan we did not want the usual stainless steel appliances but rather a cottage feel to our kitchen – she listened and gave us wonderful painted cabinetry to go with our selections of white appliances. The list goes on.
Our home was completed in August of 2012 after 5 1/2 months of construction. We came in on time and within budget! Much of the success of the home goes not only to our architect and builder but also to Susan as she guided us through the dozens of details and decisions we were called on to make. She is professional in every way and truly listens to her clients.
I have worked with Susan on two homes now and couldn’t be happier with the results. She is incredibly creative and resourceful. No matter what we started with (my past decorating mistakes) she was able to pull everything together to create a warm, welcoming home that fits my tastes and lifestyle perfectly. The rooms she designs are timeless and years later I still continue to receive compliments on how beautifully decorated my home is. I look forward to working with her again soon. I can’t recommend Susan and 2303 Designs highly enough.
From a vendor’s perspective; 2303 Design is a pleasure to work with. The entire team is professional, detail oriented, and organized! Roger and Susan are the epitome of honesty and integrity; all the while building lasting relationships with customers as well as vendors.
